In
the eighteenth century, the majority of what was cultivated
on the stony lands of Méjanelle produced very good
vines. Around Montpellier wine is strong and full of tartar
and life.
We used to make white clairette wine as well there, which
is a pleasant, strong aperitif, which was appreciated no end
by the tradesmen and students in the town. This doubtlessly
gave the name to a large Provencal farmhouse known as Blanquière,
which, by corruption over the years, became Banquière.
